How to care for human hair clip-in extensions?
Explore our recommended care guide for natural hair clip-in extensions, filled with tips to guarantee a long and happy life for your set. With regular care and attention, you can ensure that your hair extensions last as long as possible and remain looking healthy.
APPLY TO CLEAN HAIR
Before applying the clip-ins, you should wash your hair and allow it to dry completely.
ALWAYS USE A HEAT PROTECTANT
Just like your own hair, you need to make sure you are protecting your hair extensions from heat damage when styling. Using too much heat continuously can lead to breakage and dryness as your extensions don’t have natural oils as your own hair. Make sure to prep your set with a heat protectant every time you style it and avoid using the heat higher than 150°C. Ensure the tool is constantly moving on your extensions and never static in one place for too long in order to prevent any damage. We also recommend protecting your hair from the sun and sunbeds.
Keep in mind that unlike your own hair, which receives natural hydration from the oils on your scalp, hair extensions don’t have a natural hydration source. Therefore, keeping them hydrated is key to keeping them shiny and in perfect condition.
GOOD WASHING ROUTINE
Just like your own hair, natural clip-in extensions can and should be washed, just not too often. Getting your extensions wet can dry them out so we recommend minimising this as much as possible. Depending on how much you wear them, a good washing schedule to keep is every six weeks. When washing your clip-ins, use cool or lukewarm water with alcohol sulfate and silicone free shampoo and conditioner. Towel-dry the hair as much as possible (but don’t rub extensions vigorously) before using a hair dryer on a low heat setting.
AVOID HEAVY AND HARSH PRODUCTS
Some hair products can be really drying, so we recommend avoiding them when it comes to styling and washing your natural hair extensions. It’s safe to use most shampoos and conditioners that you’d use on your own hair, however, it is recommended to refrain from using products that include ingredients that can dry out the hair, including Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Alcohol Denat, Ethanol, SD Alcohol 40, Propanol, Isopropyl, and Propyl. Also, salt sprays and dry shampoo can really dry out your set and will cause build-up on the hair that can make them look dull. This will make all the difference in whether your extensions will tangle or stay soft and silky.
BRUSHING GENTLY
We’d recommend using a hair extensions brush with soft bristles or a loop brush over a regular hair brush to avoid pulling or snapping your hair extension strands. Remember to brush your hair extensions each time you take them out of their box and before you store them to keep your clip-ins tangle free. Remember to brush from the bottom of the hair first and work your way up to the root.
TAKE THEM OUT
Sleeping in your extensions is a no-go as all that tossing and turning will put pressure on the clips which can damage your own hair in a similar way as wearing a very tight ponytail. We also don’t recommend exercising, bathing, swimming or exposing your extensions to sunscreen containing avobenzone as this may cause discolouration of the hair. It’s important to get into a good storage routine from the start because good habits = longer lasting extensions. Volumi hair extensions are packaged in a magnetic closure box that is specifically designed so you can keep and reuse it as a storage container.
